Emily Lifton
Massage, movement and meditation have been part of my life since I was a child. I was initiated into meditation at age of 14, and began practicing yoga in college; but it was in 1991 in India when I met Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation (AOLF) that I began a regular meditation and yoga and breathing practice. Through AOLF I completed trainings in yoga teaching 1997, as a teacher of the breathing workshops we now call the Happiness Program in 1999, and for their school program in 2004.
In addition to the yoga I’d been doing, I began studying Iyengar yoga in the fall of 2015 and Kundalini yoga at Urban Yoga Chicago this spring. I continue to teach yoga and AOLF programs both privately and in public schools.
I received my first certificate in Body Therapy while in college in 1984. Then I went on to study in Japantown, San Francisco and received my 2nd certificate from The Amma Institute of Japanese Acupressure in 1988. Most recently I began studying Ayurveda and was certified as a Marma Chikitsa, (or Marma Therapist) in 2015 from the Sri Sri Ayurvedic Institute for Education and Wellness in Canada.
Of all the healing modalities I’ve studied and practiced, Marma is the most intriguing- it is powerful and subtle at the same time. Marma embodies Ayurveda and the principals of Yoga completely. By activating the most crucial Nadis - or points of energy, Marma allows each person’s own infinite consciousness and highest intelligence to balance, align and heal!
Transformation happens from deep within and on all levels of the being: body, breath, mind, intellect, memory, ego and Self. It takes you closer to the Source that feeds all aspects of life.
