Born in 1958, Raj Devjoti had the good fortune to be raised in a family where physical movement and culture were an essential part of life. Dance, theater, music, swimming, skiing, hiking, camping, social justice, world travel and meditation were staples. This led her to explore the magic and mystery of body, mind and spirit.

Raj Devjoti was introduced to yoga in college. With a natural inclination to share, she taught friends while traveling on the ski slopes of the Austrian Alps, hitch hiking and bicycling through Scandanavia, hiking the Andes, exploring Venezuela and many other places. Raj Devjoti began her formal training in 1997 with Divya Prabhu in Nova Scotia. She said of Divya, “In a yoga session with very few poses led by her powerful voice dripping with love, one would transcend to a deep meditative state.” Raj Devjoti began teaching “Purna Yoga”, or the Yoga of Fullness that same year.

Since 1999 Raj Devjoti has taught yoga, breathing and meditation with the International Association for Human Values programs for adults and youth. She has seen the healing power and usefulness of these practices in all the places she’s worked around the world, including with young people in the US, Haiti, Belize, India, and Brazil, as well as with adults from prisons to private studios.

Between 2010 and 2014 she integrated these practices into her curriculum as a full-time fitness and wellness teacher at one of Chicago Public High Schools. After that she began studying Iyengar Yoga for Scoliosis to help with injuries from her wilder years as an adventurer.

Already intrigued by Kundalini yoga she came to Urban Yoga Chicago in March of 2017 and was immediately hooked. The sweet loving atmosphere that Savitree, Jodh, other teachers and students have created was a perfect fit. She began her nine-month teacher training in the winter of 2019 and graduated on October 12th as a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor.

When not in Chicago, she and her husband Bill Herman live part time in Lake Tahoe, Ca.  They have a wonderful, creative daughter Tika Simone.

She brings to her teaching many years of study and life experience with meditation, yoga and yoga philosophy. In January 2020 Raj Devjoti begins teaching at UYC with a seven-week class on Creating Stability through the Chakras.
